A Birthing Process

Monika and I got together with our small group tonight to continue our study of the book of James and during our study I had a pretty cool revelation.
We were specifically talking about James 1:18
“He chose to give birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.”
This is a comforting verse and one that got us talking about the idea of giving birth. During this conversation my buddy Jason brought up the crucifixion and we discussed how the agony of Christ dying on the cross is similar to that of a mother giving birth.
Granted, what Jesus went through was much worse, but it was excruciating pain nonetheless that gives us new life.
Why I haven’t thought of that before I don’t know. Is that one of the reasons why Jesus suffered the way he did? I’m not saying that. What I am saying however is that looking at Jesus’ death as a birthing process is pretty incredible. If it weren’t for his ordeal, we wouldn’t have the opportunity for eternal life, in the same way that the pain that a mother goes through leads to our physical life.
Crazy!
I know some of you will read this and think to yourself, duh. But, perhaps others of you will see the similarities and view the Crucifixion in a new way…a birthing process, so that we may have new life.
